Apple discards Qualcomm and starts designing devices with Intel and MediaTek chips

The legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm does not seem to be even close to its end, but Apple must continue to manufacture products and apparently has found a solution to have two suppliers of chips for your iPhone and iPad, and thus completely separate from the company with which he maintains the legal dispute since the beginning of 2017.

According to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, Apple would be counting on Intel and MediaTek chips in its upcoming iPad and iPhone designs; a radical change from the known models to iPhone 6, in which Apple relied on Qualcomm chips.

Apple finds a substitute for Qualcomm
Now, Apple would keep Intel and incorporate MediaTek to use the iPhone 7 formula, and then iPhone 8 and iPhone X this year, when it started using a mix of Intel and Qualcomm chips.

This change in Apple's production faces a big challenge, because Qualcomm stopped sharing the trial software needed earlier this year after Apple filed its initial lawsuit. However, and as the WSJ report states, this situation leaves an open window for Apple to resolve its situation with Qualcomm on good terms, especially when there are still months left for the production of the 2018 mobile devices.

People familiar with Apple's manufacturing process said the company could change modem chip suppliers no later than June, three months before the next iPhone is expected.

In relation to the ongoing legal dispute with Qualcomm, Tim Cook has stated that he would rather settle for a long legal battle. He pointed out, however, that he expects the battle in the court to run its course at the end, arguing that since it is not an economic problem, but an abuse of power on the part of Qualcomm.
